Musicians
Music in Hospitals in Scotland has over eighty groups of highly skilled professional musicians, ranging from classical ensembles to folk groups and ceilidh bands. All are carefully selected at audition both for the quality of their musicianship and for their ability to communicate sensitively according to the needs of their audiences. Concerts are made into special occasions by the performers dressing up smartly in elegant evening wear, Scots traditional dress or brightly coloured outfits in the case of folk musicians. Singers and instrumentalists move freely among the audience encouraging participation as appropriate.
Programmes
In planning their performances the artists take into account the wide range of people's musical tastes and preferences, and time is taken beforehand to chat with the audience so that programmes can be adapted and requests taken. A typical programme may include anything from an operatic aria to a highland reel, and songs from the shows and wartime classics are always enjoyed by older audiences. A slightly younger age group may enjoy a country and western programme or pop items from the fifties and sixties.
Twenty or thirty somethings might prefer a programme of folk music and here too a choice of groups with individual styles and a variety of instruments can be provided. Concerts for children, whose ages may range from a few months to late teens, present a special challenge and here participation and involvement are all important. Percussion instruments and colourful costumes all add to the enjoyment.
Programmes to celebrate a birthday or special anniversary can be requested and are planned in advance in consultation with staff and clients at venues.
